What's the best way to clean up a 5 gallon fuel tank?

5 gallon Jerry cans, may or may not be rusty, may or may not have residule inside. Just the average Jerry can you buy at a surplus joint.

What's your take?

Gas will take any varnish off them if left to sit and shaken once in a while, and then you can use the gas in the mower. Rust? Wash it out once or twice with a litre of gas, when it stops coming out rust coloured then fill them up, they won't rust once full. Or slosh some diesel, kero, etc. around inside them and dump it out, once the inside is coated with it they are safe to be left empty.
